Two Oceans Marathon sets the pace for 2020 with the first 10 Club Training Runs

11 January 2020

Two Oceans Marathon (TOM) launches its series of Club Training Runs for 2020 this Sunday, 12 January 2020, and takes runners along a scenic Atlantic Seaboard course, starting at Green Point Park.

This popular series of runs in preparation for the Two Oceans Marathon has been expanded to include a total of 10 events with Port Elizabeth now added to the training run series. In addition to the six Western Cape Training Runs, one will be held in Durban and two will also be held in Gauteng (Centurion and Soweto).

It is the first time that TOM is taking its Training Runs to the Eastern Cape as part of its stated intention of engaging runners and increasing TOM running reach across the country.

Free to the running public

There is no entry fee for the Training Runs. Runners are, however, required to register on time and hand in their completed indemnity forms prior to the event.

Host clubs, format and pacing
  • TOM partners with at least one Running Club – but two or three in many cases – to host these Training Runs.
  • Runners have the option of a long or short route to assist in their training for the TOM Ultra and Half Marathons respectively.
  • Course maps, marshal points and refreshment stations are communicated before each race event.
  • TOM official pace-setters set off approximately 5 minutes apart, each with their respective bus of runners to ensure an enjoyable, safe and goal-focussed run for all participants.

Emergency medical services and traffic management are key elements of the Club Training Runs and with the support of the local municipality, TOM and the host club works closely together to provide a safe and enjoyable Sunday morning run for all.

Environment-friendly focus

Another significant change for the TOM Training Runs this year is the complete elimination of water sachets. Runners will be able to fill their hydration packs or the cups provided at the hydration stations along the route. Litter throw-bins will be set up along each route.

‘The elimination of water sachets at this year’s TOM Training Run Series is borne out of our commitment to protecting our environment. Every small effort will make a big difference in the long run and we thank the running community for supporting this initiative,’ says Race Director Debra Barnes.

‘With just under 90 days to go to Race Day, we are excited to have as many runners as logistically possible join us on the road each weekend. We are grateful to all our sponsors, Powerade, Garmin, Caltex and the City of Cape Town in helping us to make these well co-ordinated Training Runs possible’.
