Event Info

The Two Oceans Half Marathon was added to the event in 1998, and attracts a sold-out field, first-time round, year-on-year. The 2026 Half Marathon will mark the 27th edition of this incredibly popular race.

The Half Marathon is a great event if you’d love to be a part of the Ultra Marathon, but are not quite ready for the gruelling 56km. You’ll run through Claremont, Wynberg, Constantia, the famed Southern Cross Drive and then make your way back to Newlands, followed by the UCT Finish Fields in Rondebosch.

Expect an incredible atmosphere – typically, the Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon is home to the best fan and spectator support you could wish to have.

The event is run under the auspices of Athletics South Africa (ASA) and Western Province Athletics (WPA).

Faster runners are seeded toward the front; slower runners are further back.

Compulsory Kit

All South African runners competing as part of a club must wear their official club kit during the race to be eligible for club or team prizes. Your race day attire must also comply with the relevant advertising regulations.

Your TTOM race numbers must be worn unaltered on the front and back of your running vest or top at all times and may not be attached to your running shorts.

Each race number includes a disposable timing chip. Please do not bend or fold your race number, or allow it to be covered by hydration pack straps or clothing, as this may interfere with the chip’s signal and antenna. Without a functioning timing chip, you will not receive an official race time, position, or qualify for any prizes.

Hydration packs are permitted; however, they must not cover your race number on either the front or back, as this may interfere with the timing chip.

Club Kit

All South African runners participating in the Ultra Marathon must wear their official club kit. For the Half Marathon, club members are also required to wear their club kit to qualify for team prizes.

Temporary licensed runners in the Half Marathon may wear the official TTOM 2026 Half Marathon T-shirt or a plain, non-branded T-shirt.

What counts as a qualifying race? We accept any local race generating an officially measured time from gun to mat, or mat to mat, and that has submitted proof of official course measurement to our Race Manager. Create or Update Your Profile
Before you can enter, you’ll need a runner profile on our Race Admin System.

Enter the Ballot (Draw)
All Half Marathon entries are managed through a ballot system. This means you put your name into the draw — not everyone gets in immediately. There are two Half Marathon draws: ASA Club Draw (for licensed club members) General Draw (for everyone else) If you’re a club member but not selected in Draw 1, your name automatically goes into Draw 2.

3.

Wait for the Results
A computer selects names randomly. If you’re successful, you’ll receive an email confirmation (you can also check your profile to see if your name was drawn). Only then can you log in and pay for your entry. Important: If you don’t pay by the payment deadline, you lose your entry.

4.

Finalise Your Profile
Once you’ve paid: Double-check your seeding info, medical details, and club/licence number (if applicable). All updates must be completed by the Profile Update Deadline, or your entry will be forfeited.

Race Pack Collection

As a Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon entrant, you are required to collect your race number and race pack at the Expo. You may not collect these once race pack collection closes.

Collecting race pack on behalf of another runner?

May someone collect my race pack on my behalf?

By selecting the “Proxy Collection” option in your race number WhatsApp message, you can assign a trusted individual to collect your race pack on your behalf. Once completed, your original QR code will be deactivated and replaced with a new one sent to your proxy.

Please do not forward your original message to another person.

Substitutions

Substitutions open 20 January 2026 to 28 February 2026 for the Half Marathon and 15 March 2026 for the Ultra Marathon, and until 28 February 2026 for Trail Runs.

Overview

If you have entered and paid for your entry but are unable to participate in the event, you have the option to substitute out via the official Online Entry System (see PROCESS).

Compulsory Rule

It is compulsory for all runners to follow the event’s formal substitution process. Handing your race bib to another runner outside of this process is strictly prohibited.

Failure to comply will result in a disciplinary process and may lead to a ban from future events.

Why This Matters

It is vital that each runner is correctly captured in our system on race day for legal, medical, and safety reasons. Accurate records ensure that emergency services, race officials, and timing systems can identify and assist runners appropriately.

Like-for-Like Substitutions

The responsibility lies with you to find another runner who wishes to take your place and substitute into the race.

  • Only like-for-like substitutions are permitted.
  • A South African runner may only substitute for another South African runner.
  • A Rest-of-Africa runner may only substitute for another Rest-of-Africa runner.
  • An international runner may only substitute for another international runner.
  • Distance categories must also match: for example, a Half Marathon entrant can only be substituted by another Half Marathon runner.

The Substitution Process

Do not pay the original entrant directly. All transactions must be facilitated via the TOM entry system.  

The Entered Runner (withdrawing and to be substituted)
  1. Log into your TTOM profile.
  2. Click the ‘Ballot/Entries’ tab on the left of your profile dashboard, where you will be taken to your current entry summary.
  3. Click the ‘substitute’ button and select whether you want to make your voucher Private or Public.
  4. If you choose to select:

    Private – The Voucher Number will appear on your screen as well as in an email you will receive after substituting out. Send this voucher number to your substitute runner.

    Public – The Voucher Number will automatically be displayed on the list in the ‘Available Substitutions’ tab.

The New Runner (taking over the entry)
  1. Log into your TTOM profile. If you don’t have one, create a profile.
  2. How to receive a voucher:

    Private – You would have received a voucher number from another runner that would have received it via email.

    Public – Click on ‘Available Substitutions’ tab on the left of your Runner’s Dashboard. It will automatically take you to complete your entry. You have 24 hours to make payment.

    NB: Private Voucher – Click on the ‘New Application’ blue button. Enter the Voucher Number in the first Box and click on “GO”. It will BOLDEN and Underline the race for which voucher is valid. Click on the race distance and complete the entry process.

  3. The system will prompt you to enter your outstanding information, if any, plus personal fee and race-related information. Please follow these prompts to the payment stage, where you will be charged the original entry fee plus a substitution fee of R210.

Refunds, Merchandise and Ownership

    • All payments and refunds will be facilitated online via the TTOM Entry System, and no money may change hands directly between parties.
    • Parking, Medal Engraving, Temporary Licences & Hospitality Package purchases will be refunded to the original entrant (if applicable).
    • Donations made to the Two Oceans Marathon Initiative (TOMI) will remain with TOMI for distribution to our official beneficiaries.

    All relevant Substitution Process payments and refunds will be facilitated via our TTOM Entry System. No money may change hands between the withdrawing and substitute runner.

Refund process
  1. Refunds will only be done once the Substitution Entrant has finalised and paid for his/her entry, as a first step.
  1. Once you have substituted out, please send your proof of banking details to substitutions@twooceansmarathon.org.za so that your refund may be actioned. Upon receipt of your banking details, please kindly allow 7 working days for your refund to be processed as a South African runner. International runners will be subject to Foreign Exchange submissions to the bank which will take more than 7 working days.
Important Notes

• If nobody takes over your entry it will remain your valid entry and can be used by you on race day.
• You are not allowed to give your race number to someone else. Allowing another individual to run with your race number (and your entry) is against TTOM’s rules and will result in disciplinary action against yourself and the individual running with your number.
• All rules, terms and conditions that apply to the original race entry also apply to runners that substitute.
• Rest-of-Africa and International entrants substituting in and running the Ultra Marathon MUST do a qualifier. South African entrants substituting in and running the Ultra Marathon MUST do a qualifier and belong to an athletics club.
• Swapping entries outside of the Substitution process is strictly prohibited.

Entry Profile Changes and Substitutions

  • No changes to existing runner profiles will be permitted after the respective event deadlines, being 28 February 2026 for the Half Marathon and Trail Run, and 15 March 2026 for the Ultra Marathon. 
  • Runners cannot use their current entry to enter another distance category (e.g. if you have entered the Half Marathon, you can only participate in the Half Marathon)

Entries are not first-come-first-served – you must enter a ballot (a random draw).

  • The ballot system is a draw. It is like a lottery. When you apply to ‘enter’, you are applying to go into the draw. You therefore apply to have your name picked or drawn. This is what it means to ‘submit a ballot application’.
  • The ballot/draw is only applicable to local runners and those runners living in South Africa.
  • It is where you apply to stand a chance of being selected to participate in either the Ultra Marathon or Half Marathon. It is a random selection. This means it makes no difference to your chances whether you go into the ballot on the first day or the last day.
  • A South African (local) or runner living in South Africa cannot enter as a Rest-of-Africa or an International participant.
  • International and Rest-of-Africa runners cannot enter as local runners.

Not sure how to enter the Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon?

Here’s how:

  1. Update your profile. If you don’t have one, create a profile using this easy step-by-step guide.
  2. After selecting ‘This is me’, fill in your ID number and one-time PIN (OTP). If you do not remember your PIN code, select ‘Forgot PIN’.
  3. Select whether we should send your OTP to either your cell number or email address.
  4. Click ‘Send PIN’ to receive your OTP, and then type in your OTP when prompted. Click ‘OK’.
  5. Follow the prompts and change your password. Follow the prompts and click ‘OK’.
  6. You’ll now be at your Runner’s Dashboard. To enter, click Applications/Entries on the left-hand side in the Dashboard column.
  7.  Click ‘New Application’ and select the event you want to enter.
  8. Fill in all the required information. If you do not yet have your updated ASA Club licence, select the following tick box, agreeing to submit your licence number by the Profile Update deadline. Don’t include any letters, only the number.
  9. If you are successful in the draw, your status will be updated to: ‘Your application is in the draw’. You’ll also be directly notified.

If you are unable to participate in the event and you have successfully entered and paid for your entry, you can substitute out.

You will be refunded, but this refund will only happen once the runner who has taken over your entry has paid for it via the TOM entry system.

Get your bearings and familiarise yourself with your start and the immediate surrounds.

Start Times

The first batch departs at 6.15 AM 

Batch sizes are approximately 770 per batch

Batches will depart two minutes apart

To ensure a smooth and safe start from Newlands Main Road, runners will be seeded into 23 batches, divided into two groups.

Please read the following information carefully to understand when and where you need to be on race morning.

Official race timing is gun-to-mat (your time starts when your batch starts). If you move to a later batch, your time will be based on that batch’s start. Net (mat-to-mat) times will be available online for personal reference, but only gun-to-mat times count for official results.

Group One (Batches A–P)

  • Start chutes open at 04:30 and close at 06:00.
  • If you are not in your start chute by 06:00, you will be required to load behind Batch P (at Dean Street).
  • In this case, your official race time will begin with the gun time of Batch P.

Group Two (Batches Q–Y)

  • Start chutes open at 04:30 and close at 06:20.
  • Batch Q will line up at the Dean Street intersection.
  • Batches Q–Y will begin moving forward shortly after 06:20.
  • If you are not in your chute by then, you will be required to load behind Batch Y, and your official race time will begin with the gun time of Batch Y.

Blue Number Club Start Batches

  • Blue Number Club runners have been seeded into two batches:
    • Batch L: qualifying times between 2:15 and 2:30
    • Batch S: qualifying times slower than 2:30
  • Blue Number Club runners with qualifying times faster than 2:15 have been placed into earlier batches (A–K) according to their times.
  • If you are seeded in Batches A–K but prefer to start in the dedicated Blue Number Club batch (L), you may move back. Your official race time will then begin with the gun time of Batch L.

Important Reminders

  • All runners have 3 hours and 30 minutes to complete the race to be recognised as official finishers.
  • Starting in an earlier batch is not permitted and may result in penalties or disqualification.
  • You may move to a later batch, but your time will reflect that batch’s start.
  • Arrive early to avoid being moved to the back.
  • Follow all instructions from marshals for smooth and safe movement.
  • The staggered start system is designed for fairness and safety—please respect it.
  • Spectators are not allowed in the start area.
  • There is no parking at the start. Please use event trains, drop-and-go zones, or pre-paid parking within walking distance.
  • Security personnel and marshals will be positioned along all access routes.
  • Toilets and tog bag facilities are available at the start.
  • Place discarded clothing or plastic bags outside the chute to prevent tripping hazards.
  • No toilets are available inside the chutes—please plan accordingly.
  • Batch entry gates will be clearly marked—entering the incorrect batch is not permitted.
  • You must present your race bib to access your assigned batch.
  • Access to the chutes is from the M3/mountain side only. A pedestrian crossing at Dean Street will assist movement from the Newlands Cricket side.
  • Entry gates are located at the back of each chute—please move forward once inside.

Parking & Transport

Due to limited parking at the start precinct, please plan your drive in with an e-hailing, share-ride or car-pool option. Details about where to park, how to purchase your parking ticket and a shuttle service at the start will be made available as soon as these are finalised.

Nothing can be more stressful than being late on race day! Here’s everything you need to know about getting to the race venue.

Road closures will be in effect on 11 and 12 April 2026 for the duration of both race days. A high volume of runners and spectators is expected around the start venue, so please allow extra travel time to accommodate traffic and parking.

We strongly encourage all participants and supporters to familiarise themselves with the road closures in advance and plan their routes accordingly.

Runners and spectators travelling from the City Centre, Northern, Southern and Eastern Suburbs, Winelands, and Hout Bay will primarily access the start area via the M3, N2, M5, and Imam Haron Road (M24).

The start venue is within walking distance of the designated parking areas, and marshals will be available to guide you to your respective start points.

Pre-paid parking for UCT and surrounding areas close to the start will be available for purchase at the Parking Counter during Registration.

Parking is limited and will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis, so please arrive early to secure a spot.

A map of the area and a QR code with directions to the start line will be printed on your parking disc for your convenience.

We strongly encourage runners to make use of public transport or carpool wherever possible, as the start area is expected to be heavily congested.

Please note: Parking on the M3 is strictly prohibited, and any vehicles parked in contravention of road signage will be ticketed and towed away.

From the
City Centre

Take Nelson Mandela Boulevard onto the N2, then take Exit 8 to Liesbeeck Parkway (M57). Turn right and continue straight onto Campground Road, then Palmyra Road, where pre-paid parking is available at the Groote Schuur High School fields.

From the Northern Suburbs

From the N1 or Koeberg Road, proceed onto the M5, then merge onto the N2 westbound, and take Exit 8 to Liesbeeck Parkway (M57).

Alternatively, take the N1, then the R300, then the N2, and take Exit 8 to Liesbeeck Parkway.

From Liesbeeck Parkway, turn left and continue straight onto Campground Road and Palmyra Road, where pre-paid parking is available at the Groote Schuur High School fields.

From the Eastern Suburbs and Winelands areas

Take the N2 and then the Liesbeeck Parkway offramp (Exit 8). Turn left and proceed straight onto Campground and Palmyra Roads.

Alternatively, take Imam Horan Road onto Palmyra Road, where pre-paid parking is available at the Groote Schuur High School fields.

Walking Routes to the Start

Once you have legally parked your vehicle or have been dropped off, please follow the designated pedestrian routes below to access the start area safely.

From
UCT Middle Campus

Walk down Stanley Road, then turn right onto Lovers Walk.

Continue as the path bends left and becomes Highstead Road.

Turn right onto Church Street, then left onto Groote Schuur Avenue, and finally right onto Main Road (M4).

From
UCT Upper Campus

From Madiba Circle, walk down Rhodes Memorial Road onto Princess Anne Avenue.

Pass under the M3 bridge and continue onto Klipper Road.

Runners in Group 1 should turn right onto Newlands Drive, then left onto Dean Street.

Runners in Group 2 should continue onto Main Road.

From Vineyard Hotel/Cavendish Mall Parking

From Cavendish parking, walk onto Protea Road, turn right onto Colinton Road, then left onto Kildare Road.

Continue right onto Mains Avenue, then right onto Sans Souci Road, and follow the path leading to Main Road and Dean Street.

From Groote Schuur High School

Exit through the gate closest to Newlands Stadium (Campground Road).

Turn right onto Kelvin Road, proceed through the subway, then turn left onto Boundary Road.

At the traffic circle, turn right to join Dean Street and Main Road.

From Groote Schuur Primary School

Exit through the main entrance gate and turn right onto Campground Road.

Turn left onto Kelvin Road, proceed through the subway, then left onto Boundary Road.

At the circle, turn right to join Dean Street and Main Road.

From Virgin Active Parking/ Stanhope Bridge Area

Proceed along Claremont Boulevard, then walk behind the Southern Sun Hotel (Letterstedt Road).

Turn right onto Mill Street, then right onto Sports Pienaar Road.

Pass Newlands Train Station, then turn left at the circle to join Main Road and Dean Street.

Passenger Train

From Cape Town, use the corner of Main Road and Rouwkoop Road, then walk straight through to the back of the start chute.

From Claremont, use the corner of Main Road and Draper Road (before Virgin Active / Protea Road), and follow the Virgin Active parking pathway to the start.

Tog Bags

Update on Tog Bag Facilities

Tog Bag facilities will be available at the start, just after Dean Street at Great Westerford.

On arrival, you will be issued two bands, one band for your bag and the other band for you to use when claiming your bag at the finish. Make sure the tag is securely fastened around your wrist. No bags will be released without a matching wristband.

Please ensure you remove all items you need before handing in your bag. Once submitted, bags cannot be retrieved due to the high volumes.

Pace Setters

Official pace setters are easily identifiable and will carry flags indicating the target finish time they are running. Runners are encouraged to join a group that best matches their desired pace.

Our team of pace setters, also known locally as “buses” will help you maintain a consistent rhythm and achieve your goal time. Each pace setter’s target time will be clearly displayed on their flag, making it easy to find the right group on race day.

Cut-Off

3 HOURS 30 Minutes BATCH GUN TO MAT

The final cut-off time will be determined by the start gun time of last batch.

Cut-Off

Cut-off times along the route are set primarily to ensure that roads can be reopened safely and on schedule.

They also allow officials to identify runners who are unlikely to reach the next cut-off or the final finish cut-off within the allocated time, so that they can be safely withdrawn from the course.

It is important to understand that cut-off times are not pacing guidelines. Runners who pace themselves according to cut-off times risk arriving too late at subsequent points or missing the final finish cut-off.

Final Cut-Off Times

The final cut-off for the 21km Half Marathon is 3 hours and 30 minutes from the start gun time of the last batch.

If the race start is delayed for any reason, all cut-off times will be adjusted accordingly.

For the Ultra Marathon, there will be 10 medical stations positioned along the course, each staffed by professional medical personnel and physiotherapists. For the Half Marathon, 6 medical stations will be available, ensuring comprehensive coverage for all runners.

In addition, ambulances will be strategically located along both routes to provide rapid transport to the nearest medical station or directly to hospital if required.

At the Finish Village at UCT, a fully equipped medical facility will be on site, staffed with doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and supported by an Intensive Care Unit.

Should you require hospital treatment, you will be charged according to the hospital tariff rate.

The Information Centre will have information on runners admitted to the medical tent or who have been transferred to hospital.

  • If in any doubt about your health, consult your doctor before the race.

  • If you have had influenza or diarrhoea in the week before the race please visit your doctor or the race doctor before running. Don’t take any risks!

  • Watch your fluid intake. Ensure you drink enough while running but do not experiment with what and how much you drink during the race – stick to what you normally consume during training.

  • Painkillers are not available during the race, for your own safety. Analgesics such as Panado or Nurofen can cause serious complications including dehydration and even renal failure.

Spectator Points

The Two Oceans Marathon attracts arguably the best spectator support in Cape Town. Set against a backdrop of some of the most spectacular scenery in the world, coupled with the distinct sights and sounds of the ‘Mother City’.

Top Spectator Spots

The atmosphere at the start is an electrifying experience! Enjoy the countdown first-hand as the Ultra Marathon runners set off or the Half Marathon runners make their way towards Edinburgh Drive. Protea and Paradise Roads are usually lined with local residents enjoying their morning coffee while shouting words of encouragement.

If you get too hot in the sun, the beach and sea will act as a welcome respite!

The gently undulating 4km section along Noordhoek Main Road offers friends and family the opportunity to cheer Ultra athletes on before they tackle the first big climb of the day. Chapman’s Peak is waiting and while the pace is fast, most runners will be conserving their strength for the remainder of the race.

Starting at Noordhoek Village and winding its way along the mountain’s edge to Hout Bay, Chapman’s Peak, with its unrivalled views, is a bucket-list landmark along the route. Unparalleled vistas of the Atlantic Ocean and Hout Bay lie ahead. Give runners a little extra push before they embark on the climb ahead!

This stretch of the route is not accessible by car, so you may want to pack a picnic and take an early hike up the famous Chappies.

Hout Bay Main Road becomes a non-stop party zone as residents line the street from the bottom of Chappies, all along the quaint fisherman’s village to the top of Constantia Nek. This is where runners will also hit the marathon mark.

With spacious fields and dirt tracks alongside the route at this point, this is where spectators can fully immerse themselves in the spirit of the race. Your encouragement is invaluable here on the second and most taxing climb ahead!

The steep incline at Constantia Nek can make or break even the most seasoned athlete. Give the athletes as much support as you can at this point…they’re going to need it!

The Half Marathoners spend part of their Sunday morning dealing with the long, steep climb up Southern Cross Drive.

But before they do, make your way to the Ladies Mile / Parish Road intersection and offer them much-needed support before they set off on Southern Cross.

It’s steep, seems never-ending and it’s probably the first place where runners will gear down to walking pace.

Join the cheering crowds, bands and general merriment to add to the carnival of support at this point.

A large shoulder flanks the road on one side, creating a cool and shady viewing point for spectators. Road closures mean you can’t drive to and from the forest; however, if you live in the area and are up for a little bit of a walk, take a stroll and admire the sights.

The Half Marathon runners will be gearing up for a strong finish and the Ultra Marathon runners will also need that extra boost before the finish.

By the time the runners reach Newlands Forest, they can just about taste the finish line. But there’s still Chet’s Hill – usually a fairly insignificant climb, but one that becomes a major pre-finish hurdle on Race Day. The leafy road going past the Kirstenbosch Gardens entrance offers plenty of shade, and this section of the route is a crowd favourite.

The grand finale, the finish line, is everything you’d want – and more! From dramatic sprints as runners race towards a personal best to the high drama of the final cut-off gun, the finish line is an emotionally charged experience which is fitting of the race’s epic conclusion.

Parking & Road Closure Reminders

  • In order to help with congestion please look to share rides wherever possible.

  • Familiarise yourself with the road closures and ensure that you know where to park and/or how to walk to your chosen spectator spot. Steer clear of high congestion zones, especially if you want to leave without hassle.

  • Obey all traffic officers and marshals and do not obstruct roadways or park on sidewalks.

  • There is very limited parking around the Start precinct, and you will not be able to drive onto the campus on Race Day without the necessary parking accreditation.

  • No parking is allowed on the M3 and doing so will result in you being ticketed or even being towed away. Don’t take that risk.

  • No littering! We have a zero-tolerance approach to littering. Please use one of the many bins provided along the route.

  • While you are welcome to pack a picnic basket and make a day of it, please note that you are not allowed to bring a braai, skottel or gas stove.

Club Hospitality

Catch up with fellow runners and clubmates at Middle Campus, where you can enjoy the post-race atmosphere with great company, food, and entertainment. Club gazebos are located in this area, and we recommend checking with your club in advance to confirm your gazebo location, if applicable.

Middle Campus is also the ideal place to arrange a meeting point with family, friends, and supporters, as the finish area can become very congested, making it difficult to locate one another.

To avoid confusion, please agree on a specific meeting point at the gazebo area ahead of time. Gazebo allocations were made via the Race Admin Entry System, so be sure to confirm details with your club prior to race day.
