Event Info

The Western Cape’s most prestigious race, the Totalsports Two Oceans Ultra Marathon, takes athletes on a spectacular course around the Cape Peninsula. The milestone 56th edition of our globally iconic 56km route, which sees runners traverse Chapman’s Peak – often cited as the most spectacular coastal drive in the world – takes place on 11 April 2026. 

Other highlights of the Two Oceans Marathon, Africa’s best loved road race, include the natural splendour of Muizenberg, St James, Kalk Bay, Hout Bay, Noordhoek, Constantia and Newlands as well as the throngs of spirited supporters lining the route encouraging runners to #ConquerTheCurrent.

Recent estimates show that the Two Oceans Marathon contributes up to R1,5 billion to the local GDP annually. Africa’s biggest running event is backed by South Africa’s leading sports apparel retailer and title sponsor, Totalsports.

The Totalsports Two Oceans Ultra Marathon is run under the auspices of World Athletics (WA), Athletics South Africa (ASA) and Western Province Athletics (WPA).

All ultra marathon entrants must run a qualifying marathon or a longer distance in the specified times as shown below by the profile update deadline.

What Counts As A Qualifying Race?

All standard WA (World Athletics) affiliated marathons, and/or races longer than 42.2 km count as qualifying races, provided that:

  • the race course is officially measured, and
  • the race is officially timed.

Seeding

Your qualifier time will be used to seed you. Faster runners are seeded toward the front; slower runners are further back.

Club team prizes are based on the combined times of the team members. It is incumbent on all clubs to notify the race organisers if any of their athletes are not eligible for team prizes. In terms of ASA rules, athletes must be South African citizens and run in their registered club colours to be eligible for team prizes.

Compulsory Kit

All South African runners competing as part of a club must wear their official club clothing during the race to be eligible for club/team prizes.

Your race day kit must also comply with the relevant advertising rules.

Remember that your TTOM race numbers must be worn unaltered throughout the race on the front and back of your running vest and not on your running shorts.

Both race numbers have a disposable timing chip attached. Please do not bend or fold your race number or allow it to be covered by hydration pack straps or clothing as this will affect the antennae and signal capacity of the chip. Without your timing chip, you do not qualify for a final position or race time, nor any prizes.

What counts as a qualifying race? We accept any local race generating an officially measured time from gun to mat, or mat to mat, and that has submitted proof of official course measurement to our Race Manager. No updates and downgrades will be facilitated under any circumstances. It is only possible to change events through the official substitution process.​

Entry Process

1.

Create or Update Your Profile
Before you can enter, you’ll need a runner profile on our Race Admin System.

Enter the Ballot (Draw)
All Ultra Marathon entries are managed through a ballot system. This means you put your name into the draw — not everyone gets in immediately. There are two Ultra Marathon draws: Draw 1 (for those with 7 medals or more) and Draw 2 (for everyone else).

3.

Wait for the Results
A computer selects names randomly. If you’re successful, you’ll receive an email confirmation (you can also check your profile to see if your name was drawn). Only then can you log in and pay for your entry. Important: If you don’t pay by the payment deadline, you lose your entry.

4.

Finalise Your Profile
Once you’ve paid: Double-check your seeding info, medical details, and club/licence number (if applicable). All updates must be completed by the Profile Update Deadline, or your entry will be forfeited.

You will receive an 11-digit payment reference number. Use this reference to pay at the till in-store.

Race Pack Collection

As a Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon entrant, you are required to collect your race number and race pack at the Expo. You may not collect these once race pack collection closes.

Collecting race pack on behalf of another runner?

  1. Please bring your original ID or driver’s licence.
  2. Please bring the confirmation email (containing the race number) of the runner on whose behalf you are collecting. This confirmation email can be presented in hard copy or digitally, for example, on your phone.
  3. Please bring a digital or hard copy of the ID or driver’s licence of the runner on whose behalf you are collecting at Expo.

Multiple Race Pack Collection

If you are collecting on behalf of a group or team, please ensure that each runner receives his/her correct race number. This is vital in order to avoid issues in case of an emergency, or disciplinary measures after the race.

Substitutions

Overview

It is your responsibility as a runner to find a replacement / withdrawing runner. Please join the official Substitutions Group on Facebook to find a suitable candidate. This group will be made public once substitutions open.

  • You can only substitute a runner in the same race (e.g. a South African Half Marathon entrant can only be substituted by a South African resident wanting to run the Half Marathon).
  • Once the substitution is done (meaning that somebody has officially taken over your entry), you cannot enter the same distance again.

The Substitution Process

Other costs may apply (e.g. temporary licence fee in the Half Marathon).

Do not pay the original entrant directly. All transactions must be facilitated via the TOM entry system. TOM will not be held liable should you end up with a non-valid / fake / non-existent entry due to not going through the TOM entry system as per these guidelines for payments and fees relating to substitutions.

The Entered Runner (withdrawing and to be substituted)
  1. Log into your TOM profile.
  2. Click the ‘Applications & Entries’ tab on the left of your profile dashboard, where you will be taken to your current entry summary.
  3. Click the ‘substitute’ button. The voucher number will be displayed as soon as you do this. You will also receive an email with the voucher number and Substitution process details.
  4. Send this voucher number to your substitute runner.
The New Runner (taking over the entry)
  1. Log into your TOM profile. If you don’t have one, create a profile.
  2. Click the ‘Applications & Entries’ tab on the left on your profile dashboard.
  3. Click on ‘New Application’, and insert the voucher number in the ‘Entry Voucher’ section on your dashboard (at the top).
  4. Click on the distance that you are creating a Substitution entry for, and complete your entry.
  5. The system will prompt you to enter your outstanding information, if any, plus personal and race-related information. Please follow these prompts to the payment stage, where you will be charged the Substitution fee.

Refunds, Merchandise and Ownership

  • The timing chip is temporary and included in the entry fee.
  • Parking, Medal Engraving, Temporary Licences & Hospitality Package purchases will be refunded to the original entrant.
  • Donations made to the Two Oceans Marathon Initiative (TOMI) will remain with TOMI for distribution to our official beneficiaries.

All relevant Substitution Process payments and refunds will be facilitated via our TOM Entry System. No money may change hands between the withdrawing and substitute runner.

Refund process
  1. Refunds will only be done once the Substitution Entrant has finalised and paid for his/her entry, as a first step.
  2. Once you have substituted out, please send your proof of banking details to substitutions@twooceansmarathon.org.za so that your refund may be effected. Upon receipt of your banking details, please kindly allow 30 working days for your refund to be processed.
Important Notes
  • If nobody takes over your entry it will remain your valid entry, and can be used by you on race day.
  • You are not allowed to give your race number to someone else. Allowing another individual to run with your race number (and your entry) is against TOM’s rules, and will result in disciplinary action against yourself and the individual running with your number.
  • All rules, terms and conditions that apply to the original race entry also apply to runners that substitute.
  • Runners that have entered the event via Substitution cannot release that entry for Substitution again.
  • Runners substituting in order to run the Ultra Marathon must have qualified and belong to an athletics club in order to substitute (if entries sell out).
Warning: Fake entry sales, charging extra, swapping and running with someone else’s number
  • Fake entry sales: The Ultra Marathon and Half Marathon are oversubscribed. The demand is much higher than the supply. And unfortunately, that means that there are unscrupulous individuals who will abuse this by scalping entries – much like concert tickets. We keep an eye on third-party reseller sites and request that the ads are removed, but our team also needs to focus on organising the event, logistics and customer care, and cannot spend 100% of their time blocking fake entries. Please do not offer additional money out of desperation for an entry. Do not pay anyone in return for a substitution voucher. Only you can help to break the cycle of fake entry sales.
  • Charging extra for an entry and/or direct monetary transactions between two parties are prohibited: To eliminate these fraudulent activities, we have moved all substitution-related transactions online. All payments and refunds will be facilitated online via the TOM Entry System, and no money may change hands directly between parties.
  • Swapping entries outside of the Substitution process is strictly prohibited.

Entry Profile Changes and Substitutions

The following Ultra Marathon and Half Marathon entry and entry profile changes may be made online on the TOM entry system. All changes (other than substitutions) must be made by the Profile Update Deadline.

Current Entrants
  • Club and Club licence number updates. (It is essential that you update your details to reflect this current year’s Club details.)
  • Qualifiers for seeding purposes
  • Personal, medical and contact details
  • Releasing an entry for substitution (a voucher number will be generated for your entry)
Prospective Entrants
  • Creating a substitution entry, using the voucher number supplied by a withdrawing entrant
  • Finalising a charity entry (the voucher number received must be used to create an official entry)

Seeding updates for the Half Marathon are free of charge. Please log into your TOM online profile and update your seeding with the name, date and distance of the race, plus the time you ran with a website address where we can verify your new time.

Downgrades cannot be facilitated.

No changes whatsoever will be permitted after the Profile Update Deadline.

Not sure how to enter the Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon?

Here’s how:

  1. Update your profile. If you don’t have one, create a profile using this easy step-by-step guide.
  2. After selecting ‘This is me’, fill in your ID number and one-time PIN (OTP). If you do not remember your PIN code, select ‘Forgot PIN’.
  3. Select whether we should send your OTP to either your cell number or email address.
  4. Click ‘Send PIN’ to receive your OTP, and then type in your OTP when prompted. Click ‘OK’.
  5. Follow the prompts and change your password. Follow the prompts and click ‘OK’.
  6. You’ll now be at your Runner’s Dashboard. To enter, click Applications/Entries on the left-hand side in the Dashboard column.
  7. Click ‘New Application’ and select the event you want to enter.
  8. Fill in all the required information. If you do not yet have your updated ASA Club licence, select the following tick box, agreeing to submit your licence number by the Profile Update deadline. Don’t include any letters, only the number.
  9. If you are successful in the draw, your status will be updated to: ‘Your application is in the draw’. You’ll also be directly notified.
  1. The first step is to create a profile if you have not yet done so. Go to TOM profile.
  2. Fill in your surname and date of birth in the fields provided. Click ‘Search’.
  3. If you do not have a profile, you will be asked to create one and to fill in all your details accurately. If you do not provide your latest email address and cellphone number, we will not be able to notify you to let you know whether you have successfully entered, or to send you any other notifications or updates.
  4. To update your details, go to Step 2 (above). The system will ‘find’ you and ask you to identify yourself. You can then update your details by clicking ‘This is me’. Then follow the prompts.
  5. To enter (once entries have opened on the date provided), come back to the Race Admin System or simply go to our homepage at www.twooceansmarathon.org.za and click ENTER NOW. Note: You will only see the ENTER NOW button once entries have actually opened. If the button is not there, entries have not yet opened.

The criteria for being an African runner is based on your country of residence (i.e. where you live and/or work now), not on your nationality. So, if you live and/or work in an African country other than South Africa, you must enter as an African runner.

If you have not yet created your TOM profile, do so TOM profile.

If you already have a TOM profile, ensure that all your information is up to date.

When entries open, you will be able to enter at www.twooceansmarathon.org.za

Watch our official social media platforms for entry opening dates. You’ll secure your entry on a first come, first served basis. You must pay before capacity is reached, in other words, before all the African entries are sold out.​

You must log in to your TOM profile and click on the Medical Questionnaire tab on the left-hand side on the Runner’s Dashboard (underneath ‘Application/Entries’). Then answer the compulsory questions to receive your refund.

  1. Log in to your TOM profile.
  2. Type the first two letters of your surname2. Enter your date of birth
  3. Click “Search”
  4. Confirm Your Identity If the system finds your profile, click “This is me”.
  5. Update Your Details You’ll be prompted to update your:
    • Email address
    • Cellphone number
    • Club affiliation
    • Any other personal info
  6. Ensure all your qualifying race details and personal info are accurate before the closing date​

If you are unable to participate in the event and you have successfully entered and paid for your entry, you can substitute out.

You must log in to your TOM profile and click on Application/Entries.

Click on the ‘Substitute’ next to ‘Confirmation (email)’ in your Entry Status. You will be prompted to either ‘Confirm’ or ‘Cancel’ your substitution request.

Once you have confirmed, you will receive an email immediately with a Substitution Voucher number to give to another runner.

You must find another runner who matches the type of entry you had, i.e. South African runner substitute to a South African runner, Rest-of-Africa runner substitute to Rest-of-Africa runner, and international runner substitute to an international runner.

Once the new runner has redeemed the substitution voucher and paid for their entry, your substitution will be successful.

Once you have successfully substituted out where the new runner used and paid for their entry with the substitution voucher.

You must email your Proof of Banking Details (Confirmation Letter of your banking details) to substitutions@twooceansmarathon.org.za to receive your refund.​

You will be refunded, but this refund will only happen once the runner who has taken over your entry has paid for it via the TOM entry system.

Parking & Transport

Due to limited parking at the start precinct, please plan your drive in with an e-hailing, share-ride or car-pool option. Details about where to park, how to purchase your parking ticket and a shuttle service at the start will be made available as soon as these are finalised.

Nothing can be more stressful than being late on race day! Here’s everything you need to know about getting to the race venue.

Runners and spectators coming from the City Centre, Northern, Southern and Eastern Suburbs, Winelands, and Hout Bay will be arriving via the M3, N2, M5 and Imam Horan Road (M24). The start is a short walk from the various parking areas, and marshals will guide you to your respective starts.

From the City Centre

Take Nelson Mandela Boulevard to the N2 and then Exit 8 to Liesbeeck Parkway (M57). Turn right and proceed straight onto Campground and then Palmyra Roads, where parking will be available at Groote Schuur High School fields.

From the Northern Suburbs

From the N1 or Koeberg Road, proceed onto the M5, then the N2 westbound and then Liesbeeck Parkway (Exit 8).

Alternatively, take the N1, then the R300, then the N2 and then Liesbeeck Parkway (Exit 8). At Liesbeeck Parkway turn left and then proceed straight onto Campground and Palmyra Roads, where parking will be available at Groote Schuur High School fields.

From the Eastern Suburbs and Winelands areas

Take the N2 and then the Liesbeeck Parkway offramp (Exit 8). Turn left and proceed straight onto Campground and Palmyra Roads.

Alternatively, take Imam Horan Road onto Palmyra Road.

Medical Info

A full medical support team is on hand to deal with medical emergencies. Emergency medical services crews patrol the route, supported by response vehicles and radio communications from marshals, medical staff on the ground and from safety monitoring centres.

Should you require hospital treatment, you will be charged according to the hospital tariff rate.

The Information Centre will have information on runners admitted to the medical tent or who have been transferred to hospital.

  • If in any doubt about your health, consult your doctor before the race.

  • If you have had influenza or diarrhoea in the week before the race please visit your doctor or the race doctor before running. Don’t take any risks!

  • Watch your fluid intake. Ensure you drink enough while running but do not experiment with what and how much you drink during the race – stick to what you normally consume during training.

  • Painkillers are not available during the race, for your own safety. Analgesics such as Panado or Nurofen can cause serious complications including dehydration and even renal failure.

Spectator Points

The Two Oceans Marathon attracts arguably the best spectator support in Cape Town. Set against a backdrop of some of the most spectacular scenery in the world, coupled with the distinct sights and sounds of the ‘Mother City’.

Top Spectator Spots

The atmosphere at the start is an electrifying experience! Enjoy the countdown first-hand as the Ultra Marathon runners set off or the Half Marathon runners make their way towards Edinburgh Drive. Protea and Paradise Roads are usually lined with local residents enjoying their morning coffee while shouting words of encouragement.

Ultra Marathon runners stay on Main Road all the way to Fish Hoek, so simply choose your nearest location and support them as they tackle the first 20km  along this flat section of the route.

The popular stretch between Muizenberg and Kalk Bay, a bustling spectator spot, is where Ultra runners get their first glimpse of the ocean. Easing into a comfortable rhythm, this is a mostly flat route with brilliant views. The many coffee shops and restaurants lining this stretch offer sustenance and a place to chill once the runners have passed.

If you get too hot in the sun, the beach and sea will act as a welcome respite!

The gently undulating 4km section along Noordhoek Main Road offers friends and family the opportunity to cheer Ultra athletes on before they tackle the first big climb of the day. Chapman’s Peak is waiting and while the pace is fast, most runners will be conserving their strength for the remainder of the race.

Starting at Noordhoek Village and winding its way along the mountain’s edge to Hout Bay, Chapman’s Peak, with its unrivalled views, is a bucket-list landmark along the route. Unparalleled vistas of the Atlantic Ocean and Hout Bay lie ahead. Give runners a little extra push before they embark on the climb ahead!

This stretch of the route is not accessible by car, so you may want to pack a picnic and take an early hike up the famous Chappies.

Hout Bay Main Road becomes a non-stop party zone as residents line the street from the bottom of Chappies, all along the quaint fisherman’s village to the top of Constantia Nek. This is where runners will also hit the marathon mark.

With spacious fields and dirt tracks alongside the route at this point, this is where spectators can fully immerse themselves in the spirit of the race. Your encouragement is invaluable here on the second and most taxing climb ahead!

The steep incline at Constantia Nek can make or break even the most seasoned athlete. Give the athletes as much support as you can at this point…they’re going to need it!

The Ultra Marathoners spend part of their Saturday morning dealing with the long, steep climb up Southern Cross Drive.

But before they do, make your way to the Ladies Mile / Parish Road intersection and offer them much-needed support before they set off on Southern Cross.

It’s steep, seems never-ending and it’s probably the first place where runners will gear down to walking pace.

Join the cheering crowds, bands and general merriment to add to the carnival of support at this point.

A large shoulder flanks the road on one side, creating a cool and shady viewing point for spectators. Road closures mean you can’t drive to and from the forest; however, if you live in the area and are up for a little bit of a walk, take a stroll and admire the sights.

The Half Marathon runners will be gearing up for a strong finish and the Ultra Marathon runners will also need that extra boost before the finish.

By the time the runners reach Newlands Forest, they can just about taste the finish line. But there’s still Chet’s Hill – usually a fairly insignificant climb, but one that becomes a major pre-finish hurdle on Race Day. The leafy road going past the Kirstenbosch Gardens entrance offers plenty of shade, and this section of the route is a crowd favourite.

The grand finale, the finish line, is everything you’d want – and more! From dramatic sprints as runners race towards a personal best to the high drama of the final cut-off gun, the finish line is an emotionally charged experience which is fitting of the race’s epic conclusion.

Parking & Road Closure Reminders

  • In order to help with congestion please look to share rides wherever possible.

  • Familiarise yourself with the road closures and ensure that you know where to park and/or how to walk to your chosen spectator spot. Steer clear of high congestion zones, especially if you want to leave without hassle.

  • Obey all traffic officers and marshals and do not obstruct roadways or park on sidewalks.

  • There is very limited parking around the Start precinct, and you will not be able to drive onto the campus on Race Day without the necessary parking accreditation.

  • No parking is allowed on the M3 and doing so will result in you being ticketed or even being towed away. Don’t take that risk.

  • No littering! We have a zero-tolerance approach to littering. Please use one of the many bins provided along the route.

  • While you are welcome to pack a picnic basket and make a day of it, please note that you are not allowed to bring a braai, skottel or gas stove.

Road Closures

Leave early for the start and arrive at least one hour prior to your start time. The start precinct is heavily congested, and road closures are in force for race weekend.

Please use e-hailing, ride-share and car-pooling options to prevent further congestion at the start and surrounds.

The first 500 runners will take precedence over motor vehicles during the race; thereafter runners may be stopped by marshals at busy intersections. Marshals and traffic authorities must be obeyed, failing which you may be disqualified or have disciplinary action initiated against you.
