The organisers of the Totalsports TWO OCEANS MARATHON powered by BYD are reminding runners who secured an entry through the 2027 ballot to take note of the key qualifying (ULTRA MARATHON) and seeding (HALF MARATHON) deadlines.
With thousands of runners set to take on the iconic ULTRA and HALF MARATHON in 2027, understanding the key dates and requirements is essential for entrants looking to secure their place on the start line and ensure they are correctly seeded.
Totalsports TWO OCEANS ULTRA MARATHON powered by BYD: Qualifying Criteria
For runners targeting the Totalsports TWO OCEANS ULTRA MARATHON powered by BYD, the qualifying window runs from 1 May 2026 to 7 March 2027 (midnight).
To secure their place on the 2027 ULTRA MARATHON start line, runners must complete and submit an official qualifying race within this period. A marathon (42.2km) must be completed in under five hours, while races longer than 42.2km must meet the applicable qualifying time standard.
Qualifying races must be officially measured and timed, and the race distance must comply with the measurement standards recognised by Athletics South Africa (ASA) and World Athletics (WA).
All standard marathons and races longer than 42.2km may be used as qualifying events, provided they meet these requirements and take place within the official qualifying period.
For qualifying time requirements for races longer than the marathon distance, runners are encouraged to refer to the official qualifying criteria available on the event website.
Totalsports TWO OCEANS HALF MARATHON powered by BYD: Seeding Time Submission
Half Marathon entrants are reminded that the Seeding Time Submission Deadline is 28 February 2027 (midnight). Runners must submit an official 10km, 15km or 21.1km race time by this date to ensure they are assigned to the appropriate start batch on race day.
To submit an official qualifying time (ULTRA MARATHON) or Seeding Time (HALF MARATHON) visit https://www.twooceansmarathon.org.za/ to log into your profile.
Chris Goldschmidt, Chairperson of the TWO OCEANS MARATHON NPC, encourages runners to familiarise themselves with the requirements and deadlines well in advance: “Race Day is the culmination of months of preparation, and we want to make sure that runners have all the information they need to prepare with confidence. These deadlines are important, particularly for ULTRA MARATHON entrants who need to meet the qualifying requirements and HALF MARATHON runners who want to ensure they are correctly seeded. We encourage all entrants to take note of the relevant dates now and make sure that they complete the necessary processes within the stipulated timeframes.”
Wade Bromfield, Event Director of the Totalsports TWO OCEANS MARATHON powered by BYD, says planning ahead will help ensure a smooth experience for both runners and the organising team: “Keeping track of these key dates is an important part of preparing for the Totalsports TWO OCEANS MARATHON. Whether you are working towards your qualifying time (ULTRA MARATHON) or submitting a seeding (HALF MARATHON), please don’t leave it until the last minute.
“Our team is looking forward to welcoming runners to Cape Town in 2027, and we encourage everyone to make a note of these deadlines and ensure that their entry details are in order.”
