'The World's Most Beautiful Marathon'

HISTORY

About

The Two Oceans Marathon is globally lauded as ‘the world’s most beautiful marathon’ thanks to the natural splendour of its ultra marathon route. It also boasts South Africa’s biggest Half Marathon.

Each year, courageous runners tackle the 56km ultra marathon voyage which sees them navigate Chapman’s Peak, one of the most spectacular coastal drives in the world.

History

What started off as the Celtic 35 Mile Road Race in 1970 – born of an initiative by Celtic Harriers – became the Two Oceans Marathon and outpaced expectations to grow into the national institution of a road racing event it is today, injecting an estimated R1,5 billion into the Western Cape economy.

Few runners at the inaugural edition in 1970 could have guessed that the race would sell out year-on-year despite growing in size rapidly, spawning inimitable event champions and making a uniquely indelible mark on not only the South African road running circuit, but on the soul of a nation itself.

Vision

To be an iconic brand associated with world-class sporting events that benefit all stakeholders

Mission

To host world-class sporting events for the benefit of the community and all our other stakeholders.

For Charity

The Two Oceans Marathon Initiative (TOMI) is the philanthropic heartbeat of the Two Oceans Marathon.
The aim is to make a difference where it matters the most.

About TOMI

The Two Oceans Marathon Initiative (TOMI) was launched ahead of the 2012 event, as the philanthropic arm of the Two Oceans Marathon NPC, to provide much-needed funding for charities that match Two Oceans’ four social impact pillars:

  1. Education
  2. Environment
  3. Health and Wellness
  4. Athletics Development

As a runner, you have the option of donating directly to one of the four TOMI Pillars when entering.

You also have the option of buying a charity entry. The official charity partners for each event are chosen and published each year.

Since partnering with fundraising platform GivenGain in 2017, R10 275 961* has been raised for 168 charities.

(*Includes R3 838 406 raised for these charities as a result of their affiliation with TOM but donated directly to the charity, instead of via GivenGain).

CHARITY ENTRIES

Are you a charity champion?

Be a TOM hero! Your greatest achievement is putting your heart and ‘sole’ on the line when you purchase a charity entry, knowing your run is part of a deeply impactful cycle of positive change. Purchase a charity entry directly from one of our official event charities.

Are you a charity?

As a charity, community-based upliftment project or philanthropically centred entity, you are welcome to apply to be an event charity partner. Each year, the TOM NPC invites registered charitable organisations to apply to become an official event charity.

Application forms will be made available here for download.

APPLY TO BE A CHARITY PARTNER

Following a review of applications against the TOMI criteria, if you are selected to partner with us, you will be able to purchase Two Oceans Marathon entries for the Half or Ultra Marathon. You may then resell to runners.

We also encourage you to register on GivenGain to aid and amplify your fundraising efforts.

We are thrilled that charity entries have become one of the most coveted means of entering TTOM, thanks to the tangible sense of purpose and fulfilment it brings to runners.

TOMI Beneficiaries

Apply

TOMI will invite charitable organisations, NPOs and NGOs to apply for funding that will help the entity applying to implement a proposed project aligned to one of TOMI’s four pillars. These pillars are: Education, Environmental sustainability, Health and Wellness and Athletics Development.

You must be a registered organisation involved in demonstrable impact-based upliftment projects in any of the four TOMI pillars listed above.

The application form will be made available when the next round of applications opens.

These applications will be assessed by the TOM NPC TOMI. Chosen beneficiaries will be informed as soon as possible.

Thanks to the generosity of Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon 2024 runners, R223 249 was raised by way of direct donations to TOMI and distributed to successful beneficiaries. This amount excluded the more than R2,4 million raised for 65 charities on our fund-raising platform, GivenGain.

Charity Beneficiaries

How will TOM beneficiaries be selected?

After each event, TOMI invites charitable organisations to apply for funding to implement a proposed project aligned to one of TOMI’s pillars of education, environmental sustainability, health and wellness, and athletics development.

In a move to support more charities, runners are able to donate directly to the Two Oceans Marathon Initiative, as the charitable entity of the TOM NPC, and select the impact pillar they would ideally like to see supported. These individual donations were once again made upon entering the 2024 event.

Beneficiary applicants will be shortlisted by the TOM NPC TOMI Committee, after which the TOM board will select the final projects that will receive support funding.

TTOM 2024 DIRECT DONATIONS TO TOMI RECEIVED

Entry Process

1.

Create or Update Your Profile
Before you can enter, you’ll need a runner profile on our Race Admin System.
Create/Update Profile

2.

Enter the Ballot (Draw)
All Ultra and Half Marathon entries are managed through a ballot system. This means you put your name into the draw. There are two Half Marathon draws: ASA Club Draw (for licensed club members) General Draw (for everyone else). If you’re a club member but not selected in Draw 1, your name automatically goes into Draw 2. There are also two Ultra Marathon draws: Draw 1 (for runners with 7 or more TOM) Ultra medals and Draw 2 for everyone else.

3.

Wait for the Results
A computer selects names randomly. If you’re successful, you’ll receive an email confirmation (you can also check your profile to see if your name was drawn). Only then can you log in and pay for your entry. Important: If you don’t pay by the payment deadline, you lose your entry.

4.

Finalise Your Profile
Once you’ve paid: Double-check your seeding info, medical details, and club/licence number (if applicable). All updates must be completed by the Profile Update Deadline, or your entry will be forfeited.

How to Enter

Not sure how to enter the Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon? Here’s how:

  1. Update your profile. If you don’t have one, create a profile using this easy step-by-step guide.

2. After selecting ‘This is me’, fill in your ID number and one-time PIN (OTP). If you do not remember your PIN code, select ‘Forgot PIN’.

3. Select whether we should send your OTP to either your cell number or email address.

4. Click ‘Send PIN’ to receive your OTP, and then type in your OTP when prompted. Click ‘OK’.

5. Follow the prompts and change your password. Follow the prompts and click ‘OK’:

6. You’ll now be at your Runner’s Dashboard. To enter, click Applications/Entries on the left-hand side in the Dashboard column.

7. Click ‘New Application’ and select the event you want to enter.

8. Fill in all the required information. If you do not yet have your updated ASA Club licence, select the following tick box, agreeing to submit your licence number by the Profile Update deadline. Don’t include any letters, only the number.

9. If you are successful in the draw, your status will be updated to: ‘Your application is in the draw’. You’ll also be directly notified.

Substitutions

It is your responsibility as a runner to find a replacement / withdrawing runner. Please join the official Substitutions Group on Facebook to find a suitable candidate. This group will be made public once substitutions open.

You can only substitute a runner in the same race (e.g. a South African Half Marathon entrant can only be substituted by a South African resident wanting to run the Half Marathon).

Important: Any Substitution Not Done Via This Process is Invalid. Please also see ‘Warning: Fake entry sales, charging extra, swapping and running with someone else’s number’ further down this page. Opens: 06 January 2025, 1 PM Deadline: 03 March 2025, 12 PM (Midnight) Substitution Admin Fee: R210 Other costs may apply. (e.g. temporary licence fee in the Half Marathon). Do not pay the original entrant directly. All transactions must be facilitated via the TOM entry system. TOM will not be held liable should you end up with a non-valid / fake / non-existent entry due to not going through the TOM entry system as per these guidelines for payments and fees relating to substitutions. The Entered Runner (withdrawing and to be substituted)
  1. Log into your TOM profile.
  2. Click the ‘Applications & Entries’ tab on the left of your profile dashboard, where you will be taken to your current entry summary.
  3. Click the ‘substitute’ button. The voucher number will be displayed as soon as you do this. You will also receive an email with the voucher number and Substitution process details.
  4. Send this voucher number to your substitute runner.
The New Runner (taking over the entry)
  1. Log into your TOM profile. If you don’t have one, create a profile.
  2. Click the ‘Applications & Entries’ tab on the left on your profile dashboard.
  3. Click on ‘New Application’, and insert the voucher number in the ‘Entry Voucher’ section on your dashboard (at the top).
  4. Click on the distance that you are creating a Substitution entry for, and complete your entry.
  5. The system will prompt you to enter your outstanding information, if any, plus personal and race-related information. Please follow these prompts to the payment stage, where you will be charged the Substitution fee.

The timing chip is temporary and included in the entry fee.

Parking, Medal Engraving, Temporary Licences & Hospitality Package purchases will be refunded to the original entrant.

Donations made to the Two Oceans Marathon Initiative (TOMI) will remain with TOMI for distribution to our official beneficiaries.

All relevant Substitution Process payments and refunds will be facilitated via our TOM Entry System. No money may change hands between the withdrawing and substitute runner.

1. Refunds will only be done once the Substitution Entrant has finalised and paid for his/her entry, as a first step.
2. Once you have substituted out, please send your proof of banking details to substitutions@twooceansmarathon.org.za so that your refund may be affected.
3. Upon receipt of your banking details, please kindly allow 30 working days for your refund to be processed.

  1. 1. If nobody takes over your entry it will remain your valid entry, and can be used by you on race day.
  2. You are not allowed to give your race number to someone else. Allowing another individual to run with your race number (and your entry) is against TOM’s rules, and will result in disciplinary action against yourself and the individual running with your number.
  3. All rules, terms and conditions that apply to the original race entry also apply to runners that substitute.
  4. Runners that have entered the event via Substitution cannot release that entry for Substitution again.
  5. Runners substituting in order to run the Ultra Marathon must have qualified and belong to an athletics club in order to substitute (if entries sell out).
  1. Fake entry sales: The Ultra Marathon and Half Marathon are oversubscribed. The demand is much higher than the supply. And unfortunately, that means that there are unscrupulous individuals who will abuse this by scalping entries – much like concert tickets. We keep an eye on third-party reseller sites and request that the ads are removed, but our team also needs to focus on organising the event, logistics and customer care, and cannot spend 100% of their time blocking fake entries.
Please do not offer additional money out of desperation for an entry. Do not pay anyone in return for a substitution voucher. Only you can help to break the cycle of fake entry sales.
  2. Charging extra for an entry and/or direct monetary transactions between two parties are prohibited: To eliminate these fraudulent activities, we have moved all substitution-related transactions online. All payments and refunds will be facilitated online via the TOM Entry System, and no money may change hands directly between parties.
  3. Swapping entries outside of the Substitution process is strictly prohibited.

The following Ultra Marathon and Half Marathon entry and entry profile changes may be made online on the TOM entry system.

All changes (other than substitutions) must be made by the Profile Update Deadline.

Current Entrants

  1. Club and Club licence number updates. (It is essential that if you’re an Ultra Marathon runner, or a Club Member in the Half Marathon, you update your details to reflect this current year’s Club details).
  2. Qualifiers (Ultra Marathon).
  3. Qualifiers for seeding purposes (Half Marathon).
  4. Personal, medical and contact details.
  5. Releasing an entry for substitution (a voucher number will be generated for your entry).

Prospective Entrants

  1. Creating a substitution entry, using the voucher number supplied by a withdrawing entrant.
  2. Finalising a charity entry (the voucher number received must be used to create an official entry).

Seeding
updates for both the Ultra Marathon and Half Marathon are free of charge. Please log into your TOM entry system and update your seeding with the name, date and distance of the race, plus the time you ran with a website address where we can verify your new time.

No changes whatsoever will be permitted after the Profile Update Deadline. Thank you.
