Two Oceans Marathon Launches TOM 2021 Virtual Charity Challenge – 30 March to 30 April 2021

22 March 2021

The Two Oceans Marathon NPC launches the TOM 2021 Virtual Charity Challenge (VCC) and invites all runners across the globe to unite and ‘run for good’.

A much-anticipated event on the running calendar which attracts over 30 000 runners from over 90 countries annually, the Two Oceans Marathon was cancelled for a second consecutive year due to the Coronavirus pandemic, with devastating effects on the many charities that have benefitted from the number of fundraising opportunities the event offered each year.

The TOM 2021 Virtual Charity Challenge can be run anywhere and anytime between 30 March and 30 April 2021. The event is entirely charity focused and enables the TOM NPC, with the support of the runners, to continue supporting the various charitable organisations and programs that align with the Two Oceans Marathon Initiative (TOMI).

To participate in the Two Oceans Marathon Virtual Charity Challenge, runners will pay an entry fee of R90.00 to run or walk any of the distances listed.

Two Oceans Marathon Initiative (TOMI), the philanthropic arm of the Two Oceans Marathon NPC, will distribute funds derived from entry fees to charitable organisations that align with TOMI’s four pillars, namely, Education, Environment, Health and Wellness, and Athletic Development.

To enhance the charity-centric focus of the event, runners who wish to raise funds for a charity or cause of their choice as part of the Two Oceans Marathon Run For Change pledge, are required to register on the GivenGain and BackaBuddy platforms, where the participating charities are listed.

In addition to their entry, runners will have the option of purchasing a TOM 2021 Virtual Charity Challenge Runner’s Shirt or Buff when they enter.

Run anytime and anywhere and stand a chance of winning great prizes

The TOM Virtual Charity Challenge gives runners a window period from 30 March to 30 April 2021 to complete their race in any of the following distances: 5,6km, 10km or 20km.

There is no need to qualify to participate in the TOM Virtual Charity Challenge. Times will be tracked and uploaded via the FinishTime App. In addition, runners may choose to record their times manually on the Virtual Charity Challenge Honesty Log.

Participants who successfully complete their race will receive a personalized electronic TOM Finisher’s Certificate and the results of every finisher in each distance category will be recorded in the Two Oceans Marathon Virtual Charity Challenge 2021 Race Results.

Important information to know when running the Two Oceans Marathon Virtual Charity Challenge

The TOM 2021 Virtual Charity Challenge is a sanctioned event on the Western Province Athletics calendar.

Runners will be required to comply with the applicable provisions of the Disaster Management Act No. 57 of 2002 and City of Cape Town rules in relation to the use of public roads.

By entering the TOM Virtual Charity Challenge, runners agree to run at their own risk. The TOM NPC does not give any participant license to run on the traditional Two Oceans Marathon route and the Two Oceans Marathon NPC, Western Province Athletics (WPA) and Athletics South Africa (ASA) will not be liable for any legal consequences or injury as a result of runners doing so.

Covid-19

Runners are reminded to observe all Covid-19 health and safety protocols, and to always follow medical best practice advice. The long-term effects of Covid-19 on athletes are presently unknown and runners are advised to exercise caution with both their training programme and their virtual event participation, particularly if they have had Covid-19. It is for this reason that we have limited the virtual event distances to 20km or less. Runners are also advised not to run in large groups.

Enter the TOM Virtual Charity Challenge and be recognised as a TOM Charity Champion

The TOM Virtual Charity Challenge is here to stay – the results of every finisher will be recorded in the TOM2021 VCC Race Results. Top fundraisers will receive special recognition as a TOM Charity Champion.

Entries for the inaugural TOM Virtual Charity Challenge open at 10am on Wednesday, 24 March 2021. A step-by-step rundown on how to enter will be published on all TOM media platforms soon.
