As we celebrate the Day of Reconciliation and National Unity, we look back at one of the most dramatic moments during the 2022 TotalSports Two Oceans Marathon Half Marathon – a display of running sacrifice and unity that resonates ever more on a day like today.

The drama unfolded when Rita Massyn (68), running in her third TOM Half Marathon, suddenly began to fade. Rita, wife of the ‘godfather of the TOM Ultra Marathons’, Louis Massyn, was aided by two runners who sacrificed their own medals to not only assist her over the finish line, but also prevent her total imminent collapse as a result of lower back issues.

As the SuperSport cameras panned to the obvious agony faced by Rita and the selfless spirit of her two fellow runners, the TTOM platforms were flooded with inbox messages of support, wonder, concern and praise.

The cramping started at about 18km, Rita tells us, and this is when Benito Williams from Pentagon Pistols and Manenga Kwete stepped in to guide her and help her walk, each runner supporting one arm.

Understanding what this would mean, Rita pleaded with both Manenga and Benito to save their own races instead: “I did mention to both that they could leave me and not sacrifice their race for my sake, but they both vowed to give their support all the way,” says Rita.

Despite experiencing hiccups, Rita still regards the race as her most memorable one, largely due to the support she received when she needed it the most. “The event was such a memorable occasion. I enjoyed the huge support of my fellow runners. Together we walked up Southern Cross Drive, which was tough, tough, tough. When cramping started, I was fortunate that my two angel runners, Benito and Manenga, were right by my side,” says a still emotional Rita.

Speaking to Benito Williams, he recalls coming to Rita’s aid at the 20km mark after noticing her deteriorate physically from the 18km point. “She explained to me that she was cramping and I decided to assist her. That simple,” he says matter-of-factly.

When we ask Benito if he was aware of the sacrifice he’d be making, he says: “Yes, it came to mind, but I decided to stay with her even if it meant that I would lose my 7th finish and also indicated to Manenga, who joined me just before 20km, that he should go if he wanted a medal.”

It’s at times like these when we pride ourselves on being South Africans – one nation; especially when running; when the spirit of Two Oceans Marathon is what generates these remarkable encounters, broadcast for all the world to see.

Both Rita and Benito will be back to participate in the 2023 race. “ It was great to be part of the 2022 event and I hope to be at the start of the Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon 2023,” says Rita.

Benito says: “Yes, I have already entered as I plan to complete my 10 Half Marathons together with my 6 Ultra finishes.” He further adds the unthinkable – that he would gladly sacrifice his time again if it meant helping a fellow runner: “Yes, I definitely would, as I have supported many runners along the route in previous years through difficult times.”

Today we celebrate this day by remembering and honouring the acts of many who contribute their time, talents and strength to help the next person, just like Benito.
