Well January has come and gone in a flash and we hope that you are on track with your training for the world’s most beautiful marathon. We are appealing to all runners to enter as soon as they can as entries are filling up quickly. Good luck with your race preparations and remember to visit www.twooceansmarathon.org.za for all the latest race information.
We have already received 9 500 entries for the Half Marathon and we expect to reach the 11 000 cut off mark by 10 February, which is long before the entry deadline of 3 March. Well known journalist and professional coach, Norrie Williamson, will take over the reigns as Old Mutual Virtual Coach. While Norrie has some extremely big shoes to fill, he brings to the table a wealth of knowledge and experience in the road running arena and is an accomplished athlete in his own right.
This year Norrie will run his tenth Two Oceans half marathon and is dedicating his run to Dave Spence and will head up the 2-hour pace bus. He has his blue number for the Two Oceans ultra event with all ten of his runs producing silver medals – an awesome achievement! He ran his first Two Oceans ultra in 1982 and received his blue number in 1996.
Over the years Norrie has represented South Africa, Scotland and Great Britain in athletics and triathlon as competitor, administrator, official and coach. Norrie is also a motivational public speaker and his coaching CV speaks volumes about his experience as a coach.
You are definitely in good hands and will continue to receive expert advice and assistance as you prepare for race day. We wish him all the best in his new role and please feel free to contact him if you have any running queries – www.oldmutual.co.za/twooceansmarathon.
The Two Oceans Marathon office makes provision for participants who don’t have the financial means to make it down to Cape Town to experience the event through the Runners’ Village. These runners must have entered the race, qualified and preferably running Two Oceans for the first time.
The successful candidates receive an all expenses paid trip to Cape Town, which includes transport, accommodation, meals and PUMA clothing, all courtesy of the race office, Old Mutual and PUMA.
We would like the running clubs to nominate members who they feel could benefit from this initiative. Please contact Fatima Allie at Itheko Events Management on (021) 637 5501 or firstname.lastname@example.org to nominate participants.
We are appealing to all clubs and their committee members to update their details on our database through the link to Club View. This will ensure that you receive regular information and updates regarding our event, but more importantly you will be able to book your club gazebo sites for race day.
Bookings open on Tuesday 16 February. Click on the link on our website to book your site. Please take note of the following very important instructions:
• Clubs will not be permitted to bring alcohol onto the UCT fields. As all the fields are licensed areas alcohol may be purchased at the beer garden situated on the B field near the big screen. This rule will be strictly applied and enforced by the South African Police Services and contracted ADT field security.
• No open fires, gas cylinders or bottles, skottles or gas braais are permitted on the UCT fields. This is under strict instructions from Disaster Management Services.
• The Club member making the booking must ensure that all their members attending the Two Oceans Marathon are aware of the Terms and Conditions.
All the best with your training and we look forward to seeing you on 3 April 2010!
