The Two Oceans Marathon NPC Appoints New Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson

The Two Oceans Marathon (TOM) NPC have appointed Dr David Maralack and Ms Caroline Peters as the organisation’s Chairperson and Vice-Chair respectively.

Dr Maralack and Ms Peters boast a long relationship with the Two Oceans Marathon and the wider running community, and have both served as board members of the TOM NPC. Dr Maralack previously served as the TOM NPC's Vice-Chairperson, and takes over the reins from Mr Lester Cameron (Chairman), who led to the TOM NPC for the past two years.

Dr Maralack is a Senior Lecturer and Convenor of Sport Management in Commerce at UCT.  In addition, he holds qualifications in Sports Management, Urban Development Planning, Regional Planning and Social Sciences.

He has worked in both the private and public sectors, and has consulted to the SA Sports Commission on mega events policy while also being actively involved in the 2006 and 2010 World Cup and Cape Town 2004 Olympic bids.  In addition, Dr Maralack is an active runner for LOA Itheko Running Club and contributes to governance processes of the Western Province Sports Confederation and Western Province Athletics (WPA).

“I have a particular interest in sporting events and sports policy, governance and democracy, impact study and youth development,” says Dr Maralack.

“Through my passion for sport and sports development, I work closely with various large-scale sporting events in Cape Town, coordinating volunteers, engaging tertiary students to become involved in the sports industry and promoting research as a foundation to development.  I am thrilled to take on this exciting challenge, and look forward to continue working with the Two Oceans Marathon Board and with the passionate team that organises the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon,” adds Dr Maralack.

Ms Peters is the Founder and Chairperson of the community-based Nantes Athletic Club, one of the fastest growing clubs under the WPA umbrella and has occupied various pivotal positions at WPA. She is also an avid runner, who has run a fair share of half-marathon, ultra-marathon and Comrades races.

In addition, she currently serves on a number of governing boards, including the Gugulethu-based Ilitha Labantu – an organization for abused women and children, and Anex – a children’s rights organisation that focuses on the combating of child labour and human trafficking.

“I am a passionate community activist at heart, having grown up with the ethos to serve and fight on behalf of those who do not have the means to stand up for themselves,” adds Ms Peters.

“My professional management and running experience will stand me in good stead during my tenure as Vice-Chairperson on the Two Oceans Marathon NPC Board. It is my vision to see women represented in governance structures and actively participating in running to improve their lifestyles.”

Dr Maralack and Ms Peters will commence their duties with immediate effect.
