A Tribute to Sonia Beard

  • Ultra Marathon
  • Half Marathon

The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon family – and the greater Western Cape running fraternity - lost a dear friend and fellow runner on Friday, 29 November.

Sonia Beard was a familiar face at trail and road running events around the Western Cape.  Running in the colours of Foresters, she completed a number of Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathons and earned her Blue Number in 2013.

She also completed two Comrades Marathons.

Sonia was especially passionate about sharing her love for the local mountain trails. She was a former vice-chairperson of the Cape Town section of the Mountain Club of South Africa, and also made her mark through her involvement, in various capacities, in the Bat Run, Foresters 15km in Tokai Forest and the Three Peaks Challenge, where she was the first woman to earn a permanent number.

Sonia embraced life and running with passion and joy and will be missed by many.

Our deepest condolences go out to her lifelong partner and best friend, Brian Key, their family and friends.

Rest in peace, Sonia.  We will miss you.
