Mutual Two Oceans Marathon 2010

Media release

For Immediate Release

Date: November 2009

ENTRIES FOR TOP CAPE EVENT NOW OPEN

Online entries are open for the country’s biggest road running event, the 2010 Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, which takes place on Easter Saturday 3 April.

Old Mutual recently confirmed that it has committed to sponsoring the event for a further three years. Sponsorship manager for Old Mutual, Frank Brooks said: “This is definitely a flagship event on the South African road-running calendar and over the years it has become a national institution and firm favourite with local, upcountry and international athletes.”

He added that the fact that the event is open to everyone, with no barriers to entry, is a major reason for the financial services company choosing to support the world’s most beautiful marathon. “We invest a significant amount of thought, time and money into this event to ensure a truly memorable race day experience for all involved.”

Due to a renewed interest amongst the ultra marathon running fraternity, participants are encouraged to get their qualifying marathon done as soon as they can and to submit their entry to avoid possible disappointment. The qualifying window is 1 September 2009 to 3 March 2010. Entries close on 3 March 2010 or when 11 000 entries for each distance are reached – whichever comes first.

Participants are encouraged to enter online at www.twooceansmarathon.org.za but can also pick up entry forms from leading sports shops and running clubs countrywide towards the end of November.

The race office is excited to announce that runners will be able to downgrade, upgrade, substitute or do seeding changes but that this will only be permitted during the week of 4 to 10 March 2010 and cost implications plus other conditions will be applicable. Participants should visit www.twooceansmarathon.org.za for more details.

According to race director Rowyn James, the 2010 event will see the introduction of additional seeding pens with generous time batches for the half marathon. “We have also introduced extra prize money for the grand and great grand masters, as well as the veteran and masters' team prizes.”

South African entrants wanting to run the ultra marathon must belong to a running club and have a valid provincial licence number, as no temporary licences will be issued for the 56km event.

Title sponsor Old Mutual has once again put together a festival of events leading up to the main event on Easter Saturday. These activities include a comedy festival featuring top local comedians, a family day of fun runs and activities at UCT on Good Friday and the Summer Sunset Concerts at Kirstenbosch. The final concert will take place on Sunday 4 April and will feature a collaboration between Tidal Waves and Tumi Molekane. To find out more visit www.oldmutual.co.za.
