Release 6 - Auctions for Charity Entries

Media Release
For Immediate Release
Date: Thursday, February 18, 2010

As part of a major fundraising effort, the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon will be auctioning half marathon and ultra entries, as well as a pair of autographed Usain Bolt’s PUMA spikes, to participants with the highest bids.

20 half marathon and 10 ultra marathon entries will be auctioned at www.oldmutual.co.za/twooceansmarathon. Bidding for the half marathon entries opens at R950 on Monday, February 22, providing those participants who missed the entry deadline with a chance to secure an entry.

The first auction is for half marathon entries and runs through until Wednesday, March 10. The auction for the ultra marathon entries will open on March 4, with bidding also starting at R950, and will run through until March 10. Successful bidders will be notified on a daily basis, with the eventual winners announced on March 12. Winning bids will also get a PUMA product voucher worth R1 450.

Over 2 000 entries were turned away last week when the 11 000 cut off was reached in the half marathon. According to race director Rowyn James: “Many people were disappointed at not getting an entry for this year’s half marathon, which filled up in record time and closed well ahead of the March 3 cut off.”

Also up for auction is a pair of Usain Bolt’s autographed PUMA spikes, exact replicas of the shoes that took him to victory in last year’s World Championships. This auction opens on Monday, February 22 and runs through to April 5, with bidding starting at R15 000. The winner will be announced on Friday, April 9.

The Mantis Collection has added an exclusive weekend getaway to the auction valued at over R15 000. The getaway includes accommodation for two at Jock Safari Lodge in the Kruger National Park. Bidding for this prize opens at R 5 000.

All funds raised will go towards helping the event’s official charity NOAH (Nurturing Orphans of AIDS for Humanity). A section 21 company, NOAH started in 2000 in response to the realisation that South Africa faced a future filled with a staggering number of orphaned children from the impact of AIDS. It is estimated that there are more than 1.7 million orphaned and vulnerable children and this is expected to reach 2.5 million by 2015 because of HIV/AIDS.

The 2009 event raised over R260 000 for NOAH and these much-needed funds have been used to establish and support the many Arks that the charity has developed to meet the needs of those orphaned by the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

According to Frank Brooks, sponsorship manager for Old Mutual: “We tested the auction out for last year’s event and it was extremely successful as we ended up raising R30 000 for NOAH. The auction is a novel way of providing a select few people who weren’t able to get an entry with a chance to still run the event and support a worthy cause at the same time.”

The race office also announced that online entries for the event’s trail run would open on Monday, February 22. This is the first year that this event will be held and offers participants a choice of an 8km and an 18km route. It takes place on Good Friday, 2 April, before the fun runs. Entries are limited to 400 participants in the 8km and 400 in the 18km and entries will be taken at www.trailrunning.co.za.

Both routes start from the UCT grounds and will take runners along the lower slopes of Devils Peak and adjacent forests. The race will finish just in time for the start of the fun runs on Good Friday, the day before the ultra and the half marathons. The trail runs will start at 07h15, with expected finishing times from 08h15 to 10h30, depending on the distance run. For more information on the trail runs email info@trailrunning.co.za.
