Khululeka Grief Support - Successful Charity 2018
Khululeka Grief Support is the only organisation in South Africa that specialises in grief and bereavement support for children and teenagers. An independent randomised control trial with findings published in peer reviewed journal the Lancet Global Health confirms that teenage girls who attended a Khululeka grief support group showed less depression symptomology and improved behaviour.Evidence clearly illustrates the link between sexual risk taking behaviours and depression, and the death of a parent has direct impact on school performance and retention. Khululeka has a small highly-skilled and passionate staff who specialise in having difficult conversations and supporting children and teenagers, and building the capacity of social workers, child and youthcare workers to provide therapeutic support in communities with high levels of violence and death and little to no access to counselling and therapy.
Type: Half Marathon and Ultra Marathon
Cost: Support the important services that Khululeka is providing by purchasing a half marathon entry at R1600 per entry, or an ultra-marathon entry at R2000 per entry.
Each entry you purchase will go toward a teen girl grief support group: 8 x 100 minute sessions over 8 weeks with 12 teen girls of a similar age who have experienced the death of somebody who they love and have expressed feelings of depression and a desire to partake in a grief support group. Khululeka is fundraising to facilitate four grief groups for teen girls in high schools serving disadvantaged communities in 2018. Your entry will enable a teen girl who has no one to talk to about the death of somebody that she loves, most often a mother or father. The peer group will provide her with group bereavement support and the knowledge that she is not alone in this. The methodology will enable her to concentrate better at school and to practice being responsive rather than reactive when things go wrong. With each entry you purchase you will be given a free therapeutic soft toy, a Worry Muncher. This toy can be used to develop the cognitive abilities of children to identify their concerns, verbalise these, and build a deeper relationship between parent and child. This delightful soft cuddly non-gendered and non-racialised soft toy also makes a great gift. Worry munchers to be collected from Khululeka’s offices in Rondebosch, Cape Town.
You will also receive a Section 18A receipt as your purchase is a tax deductible donation.
The entry price is a flat fee and you will not be required to do any further fundraising.
