Qualifying Criteria for 56km

  • Ultra Marathon

All standard marathons and races longer than 42.2 km will count as qualifying races, provided that they are held under the auspices of the IAAF (or ASA in South Africa). Although it is a prerequisite for participation, runners do not need to qualify before entering the race. This information can be supplied at a later stage (19 March 2014).

Qualifying Period

Runners can qualify from 1 July 2014 onward. All entrants are required to have run a qualifying marathon or longer distance in specified times (see table below).

International/overseas Entrants

International runners are encouraged to comply to the same requirements as South African runners (to have run a qualifying marathon or ultra marathon in the months leading up to the race). For this reason we have extended the qualifying period to any race since the last Two Oceans Marathon. In the unlikely event of International runners unable to run a qualifying marathon within this period they may enter the race, but they will start at the back.

Qualifying Standards

In order to qualify to run the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, runners must have completed the distance indicated below in under the time next to the distance:

Distance Time
42.2 km sub 5:00
50 km sub 6:30
56 km sub 7:00
90 km sub 12:00
100+ km sub 13:30

Loyal Previous Runners

Runners with five or more Ultra Marathon medals can use the previous year’s race as their qualifier.  Blue/permanent number runners in the Ultra Marathon do not need to qualify, provided they have run in either of the previous two years races.
