WHY I RUN?

37 days, 21 hours, 24 min, 15 sec, 14, 13, 12, 11

It's with some trepidation that I watch the hour glass running out for the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon. I’m definitely not the only one who was hoping to be fitter by now. 37 days sound like a lot, but I am competing in the Cape Town Cycle Race (previously Argus) on 8 March and need to taper off a week before the event -- and if I’m sensible, also rest a week thereafter. That cuts the 37 by 14 days. Take in account the five days I need to take it easy before OMTOM, and I’m left with a measly 18 days.

Our gym received a whole studio of Wattbikes last year and although I was supposed to alternate my new-found Wattbike addiction with two runs a week, thunderstorms chased me into the gym on most afternoons. And if there is one thing that makes running a chore, it is the dreaded treadmill. It reminds me of the Bible verse when Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden of Eden: “By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food…”

I run for many reasons, but mainly because it makes me feel so amazing - even on days when I‘m less keen. It usually happens when I’m running next to the river and I smell the Eucalyptus oil as my feet bruise the leaves – yes, even Johannesburg has rivers and trees. That's when I’m overcome with a feeling of ”life is flippen awesome”.

Everything seems sunnier and problems less insignificant. And I get clarity. It's as if you shake your thoughts around and all the unnecessary “noise” falls away to reveal what really matters.

I have never experienced this on a treadmill with the sweat on my brow...

So, I'm placing my trust in muscle memory, positive thought and visualisation, hoping that I will steam up Southern Cross Drive with the conviction of “I know I can”. Or something like that.

Ek kyk angstig hoe die minute, ure en dae aftik na die Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon. Ek is seker  nie die enigste wat gereken het om fikser te wees teen hierdie tyd nie. 37 dae klink lank, maar omdat ek die Cape Town Cycle Race (voorheen Argus) op 8 Maart doen, moet ek ‘n week voor die wedren afskaal en as ek verstandig is, ook ‘n week daarna. Dit sny die 37 dae met 14. Reken die vyf dae in wat ek voor die OMTOM moet minder oefen en ek het 18 dae.

Ons gim het einde verlede jaar ‘n hele studio vol Wattbikes gekry en hoewel ek veronderstel was om my nuwe Wattbike-verslawing af te wissel met twee hardloopsessies per week, het laatmiddag donderstorms my meestal gim toe gejaag. En as daar een ding is wat hardloop harde werk maak, is dit ‘n trapmeul. Laat my altyd dink aan die bybelversie waar Adam en Eva uit die paradys verban is: “In die sweet van jou aangesig sal jy jou brood eet...”

Ek hardloop om baie redes, maar hoofsaaklik omdat dit my absoluut wonderlik laat voel.  Selfs op die dae wat ek traag begin. Dis gewoonlik waar ek langs die rivier hardloop en die bloekomolie ruik as ek die klam blare kneus – ja, selfs in Johannesburg het ons riviere en bome - dat ek daai “die lewe is flippen awesome”-gevoel kry.

Dan voel die lewe sonniger en lyk probleme kleiner. En kry jy helderheid oor dinge wat jou pla. Dis asof jou gedagtes losgeskud word  en al die onbelangrike “geraas” verdwyn  sodat jy op die werklike probleem kan fokus.  

Dít het ek nog nooit op ‘n trapmeul in die sweet van my aangesig ervaar nie…

Dus maak ek staat op spier-geheue, positiewe gedagtes en visualisering en hoop dat ek hierdie jaar ligvoets soos ‘n ribbok teen Southern Cross Drive sal uitdraf. Of so iets.
