"My Running Heroine" - by Niki Hultum
We're celebrating women runners during the month of August, and have asked our running community to share their stories of inspiration with us. Mail us about your Running Heroine and your story could feature too...
I have a friend who is my heroine and without a doubt my motivation.
In February 2014 I decided I was carrying too much weight and did not want to be a ‘fat face’ in my daughter's graduation pictures in May 2015.
I joined Run Walk for Life, Harare, Zimbabwe where I met an amazing array of people. This is also where I met my friend Marlene. She had a similar story to mine about losing weight and had achieved the most amazing weight loss through diet and exercise.
She then entered the 2014 Old Mutual Two Oceans Half Marathon and finished! I always thought these events were for seasoned athletes, but she showed me that ‘ordinary’ people - with some training, persistence and effort - can also participate in these events.
This inspired me to enter the 2015 OMTOM Half, and I had the most unbelievable experience. What a rush! What a high! I can’t wait for 2016!
OH, and I went to my daughter's graduation in Boston USA in May 2015, and wasn’t a ‘fat face’ in the photos! And thanks to my friend for being a constant source of motivation, I feel great about myself too.
Marlene Wolffe, I can't thank you enough!
