"My Running Heroine" - by Natasha Winkler-Titus
We're celebrating women runners during the month of August, and have asked our running community to share their stories of inspiration with us. Mail us about your Running Heroine and your story could feature too...
My Running Heroine - by Natasha Winkler-Titus
My story is dedicated to my best friend, Roxane Alexander (Foxy Roxy!)
Amby Burfoot once said: "As we run, we become." This is certainly true for me as running has been a pillar on my life path. But this story is not about me…
My friend, Roxy, has been a part of my life for at least 10 years and I consider her more of a little sister than just a friend. She is family. For the 10+ years she has been in my life, Roxy has been at the start line and meeting me at the finishing line as I complete race after race - as a social runner of course - always cheering, sharing my pain and joys...
Although always active and an avid hiker, Roxy was yet to join the running fraternity. That is, until October 2014, when a work colleague challenged Roxy to enter the Old Mutual Two Oceans Half Marathon and include running as part of her health and weight loss challenge.
Roxy accepted and slowly but surely started turning her beachfront walks into slow jogs. I loved the fact that my bestie was getting into running and slowly falling in love with this adrenaline rush. Whenever I visited in CT, we would go out for morning runs together. It was finally great to have her understand why Friday late nights are less attractive than an early morning 15k :-)
So imagine my exhilaration when in 2015, we lined up together for the Two Oceans Half - Roxy's very first half marathon!
But her running didn't stop there. In July we laced up and ran the Knysna Forest Marathon together! I am excited to have another friend inducted to the lifetime running fraternity and look forward to many more runs together.
